    PJ,

I was reading through my owners manual and it said to use 20W50 for the hydro's. Went to the product lit and it said 10W40. Stopped by the dealer to grab the filter for the 50 hr service and he made a call to be sure.

There is a Service Bulletin out there saying Jan 09 build and newer (with a s/n to start) they made the change to 20W50 for the hydro's. Thought that you might want it posted out there so the guys buying them this year know what to use.

Also can the guys with 08 and later models switch to the 20W50 or not?

Might want to post the Service Bulletin.

You can change over to 20w50 in the older units.
Here is what the service bulletin says.
The product literature is being changed to reflect this.

    Hydraulic oil changes in production
    January 1, 2008.
Discontinued use of Lubrizol. Due to improvements in todays hydraulic
wheel motor designs, lubrizol is no longer required by our hydraulic
    component supplier (except 4600).

    August 1, 2008.
Discontinued use of 10w-40 motor oil in all Hustler Mini Z's, Super Mini Z's,
Hustler Z's and Super Z's hydraulic systems to 20w-50 motor oil. Per our
hydraulic supplier recommendation, todays higher horsepower harder
working hydraulic systems need an oil to keep up with the demand, and so
20w-50 is now recommended on Hustler Turf mowers built since August.
Note: For mowers used in cold weather applications, a warm-up period of
five to ten minutes is recommended before the unit is operated.

    PJ,
20W50 is a little hard to find, can you use 15W50 without any problem?

I will ask and see what they say in service.
    I've never had a issue finding 20w50.

I have a 2008 Hustler Z that I wanted to switch over from 10W40 dino oil to synthetic. So I called my dealer Saturday and ask them if I should use 15W50 or 20W50 synthetic when I changed the hydro oil and he told me to use 15W50. So I used Mobile 1 15W50 fully synthetic. Please let me know if that is not ok. I thought the dealer would give me the correct information. Besides, 15W50 is what I have always ran in my Toro hydros.

I am sure your dealer has been doing this in your area and your likely not going to have any issues.

Okay I have a 03/2003 super mini z. The manual recommends 20/40 with lubrizol
To convert to synthetic what should I use to exclude the lubizol.

While we are on the subject. What is the proper tool and size for the drain plug on the reservoir.

I can get it off but nothing I have really matches the hole.
It is kinda getting stripped out now so I can't really tell.

could it be 2008 machines came filled with 20w50 though sticker still sayed 10w40?
if i added 10w40 to 20w50 - would this hurt the system?
can i not completely drain system but just change oil in reservoir - so it would be not full change but gradual?

what was the purpose of using lighter oil(10W40)?

The manual for your unit says 10w40 with Lubrizol.
If your going to go to Synthetic I would go with 20w50.
