Take shifter out

    How does the shifter come out on an '83 4spd? I got the boot off and there looks like 2 pins or set screws in the housing, but it got dark out and I couldn't see.

    you just push down on it and turn it. it is spring loaded. you need to have it in the neutral position.

    As 4x4k20 said, push down & turn - there is a spring loaded "collar" that turns to release the shifter - the same idea as your turn/marker light bulbs. Also, make sure that the trans is still in neutral when you go to put the shifter back in. (We made that mistake at work trying to put the stick back in the trans in our boom truck (same mounting system) and it took us a while to figure out why it wasn't working!)
