Termite Damage?

Discovered one hollow dirt tube with active termites inside of it on wall in garage. Same wall had five additional hollow tubes but with no termites inside of them. Did some more checking around the house and discovered in the basement a floor joist with two dirt shelter tubes suspended from joist and some more dirt where same joist meets band board.

Purchased house new in 1996. I live in northern Virginia. I've contacted three Pest companys for appointment to come out to house to inspect and sales pitch. I meet with each of them next week.

A couple of questions: Can termites survive soley inside house/wood without the need to return to their dirt nest? How does one tell the extent of damage done by termites?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
