    If I'm not mistaken, most of those are Superior brand valves. They're (originally) from central California, not Texas.

    Superior used to sell a cheapo brass special of their 3/4 bonnet on a one-inch body. High flow losses on that pup. I could just see using the manual valves as system shutoffs. Not many accidental operations with that 'X' handle, and the packing nut tightened up.
