I was looking for some new tools to buy that would help make life easier and faster. I have the basics, 753 bobcat, gas powered plate tamper, wet saw, rakes, shovels, etc. I am looking for the next big tool that every hardscaper should have.

I have a Topcon laser with the adjustable slope feature. I find it very helpful for patio and wall bases.

I have a craftsman laser level, what is a Topcon laser? Is it like a transit?

Topcon is a rotating 360 degree laser level. It does the same function as a transit, but can be operated with only one person. Once the height of the laser is set, the target on the grade rod can be moved up/down to determine the plus/minus of the grade. Topcon is the brand name. I know CST Berger and David White are great laser as well. The topcon fit my budget and needs best.

I bought an off brand on craigslist for $300... it is a cool tool to have... for drainage, grading, and patios.

I have the topcon also..I would like to get a block splitter, we do alot of versa lock walls and always need a nice clean split face. Rental is cheap enough, it's the driving to go get it that gets old.

What do you all do about screening rake? Thinking about buying one of those adjustable rakes from pavetech. We are using just a straight 2x4 or just a grade rake that is 36' wide in combo with some 1/2' screening rode.

Pave Tech offers good "Screeding" boards, also called screed boards. Their stuff is pricey, but good. The "1/2' screening rode" your asking about would actually be a 1 inch dia. screeding/screed pipe.
