I have a Toro 16 HP Lawnmower, B&S engine. It runs good for about 20 minutes or so and then it starts backfiring and dies out with a puff of black smoke .
I cleaned the carburator, replaced the oil, fuel and oil filters and plugs. Again it ran great for 15 - 20 minutes and then backfires and dies out. If you leave it for a while, it starts again but dies out some minutes later when it is hot. Same thing over and over again.
    What would cause this?

Check to see that the fuel cap is venting, or it will cause a vacuum in the tank and starve itself.

If it's venting, you may have a defective ignition armature. If this is the case, a dealer needs to test it (I forgot how - it's been a while since I've had to). They are covered by Briggs's warranty. Lifetime on the ignition armature.

Have you checked the valve gap? Always worth a look. Good luck Phil:)

    Lifetime warranty?

Post the model numbers off of the engine, and we will give you the specs and
    instructions on adjusting the valves.
