Looking at a 48/52in deck to supplement. I know the Toro Z500 series starts at 52" deck but not too much difference between 48 and 52". Is there any reason to not get the Z500 series ? The Z500 series is a bit larger than the Z450 but after looking at the specs, its not much at all. It's like 2in longer (width is the same) but larger vertically (taller). Taller doesn't bother me too much and takes the same amount of space in storage/trailer. So, what are you guys thoughts on the pro's/cons of the Z450 vs the Z500 ? Thanks

I had the Toro Z449 (?) It had a 52" deck and a 19hp Kawasaki. Great mower, beautiful cut. I would suggest you go with as much horsepower as you can afford. Especially for mulching or cutting thick wet grass. The 19hp just doesnt have enough to get you through that kind of stuff. Go with as much hp as you can and get the foot pedal for the deck lift.

Yeah the Z400 was just a bit light of power from my recollection as well which is why I was considering the Z450. I think the Z450 uses a 23hp/kawi for the 48 and 52. The Z500 and Z550 are 27hp/Kohler. I believe the torque ratings on the 27Kohlers is only a little higher than the 23hp Kawi. Definitely a bit more powerful than the Z450, but the Z450 at 23hp for a 48 or 52" deck is certainly not something that one would call "lacking"

The thing is the Z500/Z550 series look HUGE compared to the Z450 series, but looking at the actual measurements - the difference is very very minimal. The size seems to come from the overall height. Outside of the obvious price difference - is there a compelling reason to go for the full size vs the compact ? It's an obvious choice if you are going to go with 60/72" decks, but trying to compare the "smallest" full size vs the larger "compact" ztr ?

The 550 will have more hp, tapered roller bearing spindles, and I believe 12cc hydro pumps vs. 10cc on the 450 series. I believe they both have the turbo force deck, if not definitely get the 550 because I know that does. However if you are talking about the 450 vs. the 500 series I think the 450 series gets more bang for the buck. Check out their website it compares all the models. Sorry if this is a bit confusing, but Toros models are kind of screwy anyways with their numbering and the standard features of each. We just went through this ourselves so I can relate.

Sorry Anthem I misread your post. If it is between the 450 and the 500, I think I would go for the 450 due to the fact the 500 doesn't have the Turbo Force deck. Get as much power as you can in the 450 though- if it is not enough it is worth the jump to the 550, it's gonna cost more, but well worth it I believe.

Go with the 450 series. I have 3 and 1 500 series - not much difference at all.

jaybird, thanks for the response. Actually you probably misread what I mistyped. I shouldn't compare it against th 500 but the 550. Comparing the 450 vs the 550, both have TF decks. The 450/23 with a 48/52" deck vs the 550 at 27hp/Kohler or 28hp/Kawa with a 52" deck. I think the Kawa is a better more torquey engine.

I guess power aside since we all know more power is better. Is there any reason to consider a "full size" vs "compact size" ? Here are the specs including the all-important length:

    Z550 27/28hp
    Height 53" w/o ROPS, 72" w/ROPS
    Deck Width 53.7, 68" w/deflector
    Length - 79.5"
    Wheels 23-9.5-12

    Z450 23hp/Kawa
    Height 52" w/o ROPS, 70" w/ROPS
    Deck Width 53.7, 68" w/deflector
    Length - 78"
    Wheels 23-9.5-12

So, we're talking 2" taller for the 550 and a whopping 1.5" longer. Not exactly a big difference between a "compact" and "full size". . . Has anyone gotten a Z550 (or 500 series) with the smaller deck and regretted getting it vs say getting the same size in the Z400/Z450 series line ? Basically if you are getting max 52" deck - is it worth it to step up from the Z450 to the Z550 ? Cost difference is a little less than 1k. Trying to come up with a reason to get the z550 vs the 450.. . .

With the 550 you will be getting quite a bit more where it counts, especially if you ever put a collection system on it. Better spindles, more power, and bigger hydro pumps with check valves. We went with the 28 Kawasaki on a 52". I think it will allow you to grow into this mower instead of grow out of the 450 if that makes sense.
