Trailer Question

    We have a Kaufman pintle equipment trailer with the self contained hydraulic ramps. The battery that runs the hydraulics is going dead, I think the wires are crossed somewhere because the lights come on on trailer when battery is charged. And there is no trickle charger on it. Is it possible to just run the + aux wire from the plug straight to the battery to slow charge it while the truck is running. It's a freightliner tri axle and the + wire on the plug does have power.

    That's how you are suppose to charge it. Make sure it is on a switch that only powers when key is on or could possibly run truck dead if not used in a bit

    Kaufman guys said it is supposed to have a trickle charger device on it? There is nothing so I'm going to run the hot wire to battery. The plug goes off when key is off.

    if you do it the way you suggest, you will have to upsize the hot wire all the way from your power distribution block in the truck back to the trailer connector. I would guess at least a 6 gauge wire. And it had better be fused at the source.

    Normally there would be a DC to DC battery charger mounted on the trailer running either off the aux power pin or the running lights pin.

    The problem with running the long direct feed is the voltage drop through the wire will negate any charging effect at the battery.

    This is what I wasn't sure about, if the small wire would supply enough voltage to make any difference? I may need to buy a trickle charger and mount with the battery after all.

    the problem is that the wire will overheat and if it is in a bundle it will cause damage and possibly a fire. batteries basically represent a dead short if they are in a low state of charge.

    Isn't that how u charge an electric brake battery? We had a goose neck dump trailer the same way

    an e-brake battery is only about 20 Ahrs

    As long as you have a full size battery too run the ramps then the wire size charging the battery will be irrelevant as long as it is protected with a fuse.

    You can get an isolator that keeps it from pulling to much current from the charging wire. I would say a 12 guage wire with a fuse on the front end would work. You could even get a self resetting breaker in a amp rating lower than the wire and install it before the battery on the trailer. Then if it started to pull to much current when you were running the ramps it would trip then reset when the load was removed. That would be the cheap route vs buying an isolator.
