How cautious should I be about cutting large tree roots during landscaping. I am speaking of large mature trees. I was able to get my current job completed without cutting roots. I am asking for later jobs.

Discuss this root problem w/customer and suggest either adding soil and grass seed and/or mulched tree ring. Depends where it is in the landscape. Don't hurt the tree!

Not only do not cut but try to keep off the roots as much as possible. Driving over (even with mowers) can hurt many trees. Best bet is to mark off area around tree as large as drip ring.

That's all well and nice in theory, however odds are eventually you will have to cut some roots.

    Couple things.

    1) see if you can do the job in another area which doesn't disturb root systems
    2) if cuts must be made, try to leave as much root in tact as possible.
    3) if cuts must be made, make CLEAN cuts... no hatchet or axe work. Saw, snip, or lopper work.
