I believe they are maples, not sure what kind. I didn't plant them, the home builder hired a company to plant them. What does the crown look like?

The crown is the base of the trunk that starts to flare as it transistions into roots...
Ideally, the flare sits at ground level and is at least partially visible... too deep and the tree dies...

If they're maple it is probably NOT a graft,,, but just sucker branch that was removed at the nursery...

Geez ....... It's not a "scar", it's a graft union, and the tree should have been planted higher.

those graft unions are about 8" up from ground level, not sure where they're supposed to be. not much I can do about it now anyways...

Not in the pic you posted.

They should be 6-8" above ground ideally with the graft pointed to the north-east.

Above the ground includes any mulch. The pic I posted the graft union is at the proper height and orientation.

take your pic for example...the mulch would be built up to the bottom of the graft union in your pic. that's about where it is on mine. I was just wondering if it had to be covered or left exposed

Soil or mulch .... it matters not. Don't plant a grafted tree with the union that close to the soil/mulch. Further, if you (or someone else) piled 8" of mulch around that tree, you need to remove it.
