Trimmer racks - why do they get stored horizontally?

I'm sure I'm missing the obvious here so I have to ask. The trimmer racks I see on both open and enclosed trailers always store the gear horizontally. Why? I wouldn't think it'd take up any more space to store them vertically, so what's the reason?

I built a trimmer rack for my enclosed trailer and it stores 4 trimmers vertically. I haven't had any problems with doing this, I like it better because they are all within reach just inside the side door.

I have had a trimmer bend the shaft from hanging horizontally, right by the throttle

I build rack both ways. All depends on where I want them. I like gas caps up to keep gas from leaking out when in the sun...Chuck
