I have a 16HP briggs ELS on a Quick 36. I have had trouble starting it for a while, but now it seems very hard to turn over. I have a brand new battery and new spark plug. It seems like something is holding it back. I have taken off the drive belt and taken the clutch of the engine shaft, so I know this problem is when the engine itself. When I do get it started it doesn't sound right and it doesn't have the blade speed that it used to. It clogs up easily and feels like their is less power.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt.

check the valve lash. it should be .004-.006.

while you have the rocker cover off turn the engine over by hand and see if both valves move the same distance.

those engines seem to need a few valve adjustments in the first 20-200 hours, and they have had a problem with cam lobes wearing down.

That might be out of my range of fixability. Could you give a detailed description on how to do that. thanks for your reply.

if you are not SURE you can do it take it to a dealer.

it's kinda hard to explain without being able to post pics. get a manual (your local library should have one), or take it to a dealer. you'll save money because the mech. will charge to undo what you've done if you do it wrong.
