Checking oil in gearbox and it was low, I filled and screwed plug back in. Next day oil had leaked out, to replace the seal, does the gearbox have to be split to replace or can seal be pulled and new one installed? From what I have read backing over tall grass/weeds will eat the seals up and I'm guilty of cutting 5 foot tall Johnson grass.

you need to remove the gearbox and split it apart to replace the seals. Yes, your 5ft tall johnson grass can get wound up and ruin the seal.
