Use Of 16-2 LV wire

    I am installing a job that has numerous "clusters" of 4 LED bullets (2 palm trees about 10 feet apart with 2 bullets each).

    I like the positioning flexibility of the bullet being at the end of a lead as opposed to the lead looping through at each light.

    Any problem with extending the 36" 18-2 lead on the bullet with 16-2 back to a hub location? The 16-2 extensions would vary in length from 5 to 10 feet. The hub splice would be 1 number 12 wire in and 4 number 16 wires out in a grey King connector.

    Fixture manufacturers have been using 25' leads of 16/2 for years. As long as your main home run is 12/2, I would do what is convenient for you. I wouldn't have an issue with splicing in 16/2 for 5'-10' to get back to a connection point. I usually group all my lights anyway, which is why I still buy fixtures with 25' leads.

    To be technical, the hub method using 16g 25', connected to a 12g home run on your typical 25 amp circut breaker is not to code as I understand it. The circut breaker or fuse must be rated for the smaller wire used, unless the smaller wire is 12" or less from the fixuture to the 12g home run. If you fuse at the hub to the load of the fixtures then you are ok. I have found some hub method wired systems where there was a short in the 16g fixture wire that did not trip the tranformer fuse and turned into a cigarette lighter. We use 12g wire up to within 12" of the fixture on every job we do after I found that in 2 jobs and consulted several code experts. It is not worth the risk in MHO.
