Residential, i prefer using a trimmer, walking along walkway while in the grass...the angle of the line cuts slightly toward the grass..I also like to cut the top edge of the grass at 45 degrees so it doesn't look square...hence favoring an softened edge....I walk backwards, foreword, whichever is best at the time...trying to not throw debris at cars, Windows etc.
On commercial I like to walk forward with trimmer turned over...as fast as i can walk.
The key is to being able to go backwards or foreword , following an efficient pattern to save steps .....I keep about 20 ft of cord in my pocket so I don't have to go to truck...usually, I'd have to string a trimmer every 15 or 20 yards. .095 line..I like an edges on the truck for new yards. One things for sure, you don't get hit in the face with a stick edged!

out here on cape cod, you just don't see edgers used too often. Lot of stone and shell driveways and what not, a lot of older subdivisions without sidewalks. I love using my own edger along my driveway but I could get by fine without it I would say but in other areas I could see it being essential
