I have a commercial account that has approximately 100' of Junipers. There are various types of weeds and some Posion Oak growing all over the plant. Is there anything I can spray to kill the weeds and Oak without harming the Junipers?
Fusilade and Manage can be sprayed off the top of Junipers to kill many of the weeds. DO NOT MIX THEM. However the Poison Oak starts are impossible to get selectively. You might try wicking them with a 2-4-D product.
Originally posted by dishboy Have you had any success going right over the top without harming the junipers. I need to do this but have been afraid to.
I usually sprinkle it over the junipers and then go over them with a rake and knock it down through the top layer of growth. I dont want to take a chance with it laying on top and maybe burning the plants.
Have to be careful with some types, mainly the very low growing carpet types. Too much casaron will yellow and almost kill them. What ever you do, dont use it on heathers. It will kill them off real quick.

Lontrel is a herbicide which is labeled for over the top control in many evergreens of thistle and many other broadleafs in Nursery stock. Many landscapers are using it for ornamental uses as well.
The active ingredient is Chlopyrilid, which is in confront and other weed control mixtures. This might be your answer for control of thistle and other weeds in Junipers and other evergreens!
Read the label carefully and proceed with caution. A little goes a long way ( 1/8 to 1/2 oz. per 1000 sq. ft. )
Oh goody...just what our environment needs. Why experiment when you can research and use what is proper? The advice to use Lontrel was dead on, but then again you probably saw what it cost and said no way even though you didn't realize the container would last you a couple years.
P.S. If what you bought was actually Fusilade instead of "Fusilage" (new to me), you are only going to kill annual grasses and not broadleafs. Maybe you better go back and read your materials again...or better yet...maybe NC should make ther test harder.
Click the link at the item number to get the only label for Lontrel I can find. Even the DOW homepage links are turned off since Lontrel is under label revision. I would check this label carefully & soon, If the Junipers you're treating are clear, then save this label as a pdf. Then buy some Lontrel ASAP before a label revision prevents you from ever using it this way again.
Lontrel is a very unique tool that our industry has largely ingnored despite our wishes to have a selective herbicide to control broadleaf weeds over the top of labeled ornamentals.
Maybe it was ignorance. Maybe it was the price. Maybe the fact that Clopyralid is losing it's residential label. Perhaps it is all of the above. But do yourself a favor. Buy some now & keep the original label handy for those odd cases that require this unusual tool before the option is gone forever.
Thank most of you for your input on the weed problem. I only had one response that was not helpful and he knows who he is. I guess he can't remember when was starting out in this end of the business.
I got enough help to solve the problem and want be asking for any future assistance from this site!

Can't take the truth? If you reread my post instead of looking at the snide comments I made...I did tell you that Lontrel was the way to go. Sorry if you can't take it...wait til you have to deal with a PITA client, you'll toughen up eventually.
I can take the snide remarks but a personal attacks was uncalled for especially since all I was mis spell a word and used the work experiement. I try to avoid contact with people like you. I only handle Commercial accounts and most of them are professionals.
Just for your information, I can afford the $179.50 for the Lontrel as I have a quart at the house.
Just stay under the radar puppy...and while you're at it lie down in the pasture LOL
