Surge brakes are a type of hyd brake. A master cylinder assy is mounted on the tongue of the trailer. The coupler is mounted and is allowed to slide for and aft. As the tow vehilcle slows, the trailer will be going faster and therfore pushes the coupler aft, which in turn pushes the piston of the master cylinder in and activates the hyd brakes. They work pretty well except for backing, especially up hill. You have to get out and lock out the coupler so it doesnt move and allows you back up with out the brakes coming on.
