What steps do you take to winterize ferns? They are potted not in the ground.

    Thanks

Cut the dead off right at the ground and mulch them heavy, around and on top.

If the ferns are in pots, do I put them in an area( garage, basement) or just leave them outside?

I misread your original post. I read it as they were potted in the ground, sorry. If they are in pots they should have been brought i before it got cool, not cold. Are they still green and growing well? I would not bring them into your warm house now because they will go into shock. Slowly bring them into your home. Set them in a cool sunny spot for a few days, away from the cold (maybe your garage, but they do not need to be in the dark during the day). then bring them inside. They will drop some foilage but they should recover.
