What engines to avoid?

    -I'm buying a new truck in the future, it's going to be gasoline, and an extended cab (not that really has to do with anything). In the 1997-2002 range. There's a lot of 5.3l chevys, and 5.4l fords.

    What engines are good, and what do I want to avoid.

    I've had great luck with 5.3 Chevys. I know several people with 5.4 fords that have had some major issues, plus for whatever reason everyone I hear seems to rattle and tick. For a Chevy it'll be 99 or newer for a 5.3, anything older will be the 5.7

    From everything I hear the Fords are prone to sucking in spark plugs, just make sure to check the plugs or have them changed. If they are lose watch out. The 5.3 is great on gas mileage and durability; however, it is only available in a 1/2 ton. 2500 or 2500HD 1999 and up will be the 6.0, I hear they are smooth and reliable but not great on mileage. I have a 2000 6.0 on a 2500 basic LD not as common or rugged as the HD and they only made them a few years has 128k runs like new and get 13-14 in town mileage not working it. The 5.3 should be 18-19 from what I hear.

    1 more thing depending on where you are located ( on a smart phone now can't tell) I would be more worried about rust and underneath rot than anything else. That seems to kill most modern vehicles before the engines ect nowadays.

    Ya, I'm up north. I'm bringing along my mechanic so he can have a look too. Two sets of eyes will hopefully be better at finding anything that could possibly be wrong/go wrong in the near future. And all I'm really looking for is a 1/2 ton. I don't need anything huge, and 18-19mpg is definitely more desirable.

    That's funny I hear it the Chevy 5.3 has more problems vs 5.4 Ford I have 3 5.4 trucks in the SD models not much problems at all Coil packs about all I ever done all 3 are above 100k on miles

    But never know about anything these days

    As a mechanic who has had to do the dreaded plug changes on the 5.4 i hope you have done yours early. once they get past 50xxx there is little to no hope of them coming out without having issues. not to mention the problem solver plugs are close to 30.00 bucks.

    All trucks I have I owned since they was new
    I never had issue on the 5.4 My 99 dually I replace the plugs once when I did the coil packs back in Feb and truck hit 120k with np
    I have 99 crew cab replace coil packs/plugs at 100k with np
    My 02 has 80k and haven't touch it

    I did them all my self

    I had problems with my 87 460 ford The plugs would break off

    Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones in the world on the 5.4 who knows

    I did hear about some the new models sucking in plugs

    My advice....stay away from the 5.4. I have a 2006 Ford F250. I bought the truck new and so far I have put 54000 miles on it. The truck is already ready for a 3rd exhaust manifold. This time I'm going to be the one footing the bill.
