I turned on a zone today and noticed right away a lack of pressure and this is what I found. I think the lower pipe is 1" and the upper is 3/4. I already removed the rotor and the riser. This system is 36 zones and run off a well with a pump. Why was this connected this way? Do we need to do anything to special to repair it?

Because the person who installed it or repaired it sometime before was a idiot.
Was that new 1"x3/4" ST 90 elbow your install with all that glue mess???

    if not...

    My guess is this.

The bottom pipe is the original installer.
Then after several years the homeowner wanted to extend the zone, so some irrigation person extended the zone at the very last head of the zone and felt that the piping was too deap. So the raised it up and extended with 3/4 with hopefulness to have pressure.
