2014 is right around the corner. Whats your advertising plan and what %of return do you want to shoot for? I will start

30,000 post cards sent out through out 2014
2 local shoppers in the area: full page ads in both for 3 months

One of the shopper sends out 44 thousand homes/month
The other send out to 35k homes per month

In the spring I'm also going to pass out quotes to the neighboring yards around my yards that states: I do your neighbors lawn at: ……. This is your quote for fert and weed control call for details…

Thats the plan so far. Its getting close and I'm getting excited how bout you all?

I've never done lawn signs (going into my third year), and that's going to be a big focus for next year, I pick up so much business from people stopping while mowing houses on main roads, I decided lawn signs should be the best return on my investment. I do local forum ads that bring in big business, its free and I get quality customers. Direct mail has gotten me some business, but its expensive and the return rate is extremely low.

Local shoppers have been a money pit for me, so I'm done with them. I could send out hundreds of direct mailers and get a handful of customers for the same price. Last one I did I got one call and it was a garbage lawn.

One thing I am adding this year is a full blown referral program. I will send half sheets promoting it with all estimates and invoices.

Me too. I'm going to give $25 for every referral that stays over 6 weeks.

Well we usually do 5000 cards in doors for mowing services and get roughly 50-75 new customers. We are looking to hire 2 new guys this year which means we need to put out 20000 cards. This shouldn't be to bad as we put out over 30000 cards for aeration. Thinking of a mowing service card on one side and aeration card on the other??? In thought process now still have till March before we do a big push.
We have tried lawn signs but find that they get picked up quickly by the city and competitors.
Tried direct mailing and didn't have the response we get by just putting cards in the door.
We tried radio and it worked ok but a lot of people looking for cheap service.
    Good luck in 2014!!!

sounds like a good plan, 30K is alot. I'm gonna continue to rely on being found on google next year, i still get calls and run estimates now, can't wait till that number picks up. I am doing the same thing with post cards for the neighbors. I leave postcards on all the neighbors door with a price. I lettered my truck up in the fall and hoping that can get the name out there a little more. I think i stand out alot more when i'm out working. Its helped a little so far.

door to door? Ive never done it but have thought about hiring people just to knock on the door and if they are interested in a quote then get their name, address, phone, email. Then I can follow up with actual quote only for the ones that say they are interested.
