What Kind of Remote Port is This?

    This is true. Those circular connectors are generally built for heavy duty cycles, where as your standard serial port connector is not.

    If any and all D-sub connectors have gold plating on the pins and receptacles, then they should endure.

    Has nothing to do with plating, but rather they are not mechanically built to withstand repeated connect and disconnect duty.

    Remote use wouldn't involve repeated connect/disconnect action. I still worry more about contacts in the plugs and receptacles getting corroded or dirty over time, and that's where some gold plating could help.

    HUH? Every time you use it you are plugging and unplugging.

    Three or four plug/unplugs a year? Hardly a worry. No issues with straining cables, either.
