What kind of tree is this???

    Ok... I know quite a few trees but I've never seen one do this before... Blooms are purple like a Eastern Redbud, but bark etc doesn't look like a redbud. Any ideas?

    That is a redbud..........................under severe stess!!

    cannot see the leaves, but do not know of another tree that flowers like that, Redbud

    You can see one of the leaves by the bottom right corner - a little bit up from that. It appears to have the leaves that are common to the redbud.

    did you snap that this spring? If it wasn't stressed then, it oughta be after this years drought! I call redbud w/some freaky bloom mutation!

    The Eastern Redbud or the Cercis Canadensis does bloom from the trunk. It isn't really that uncommon.
