I bought a John Deere GS30 WB 36" cut with a blown 13hp kohler command Pro engine on it. Well, I bought a Kawasaki FB460v to put on it but found that since I don't have the voltage regulator and capacitor for the kawasaki, I can't get my electric clutch to work. The parts are expensive and I just don't have time to tinker with it until it works so I have decided to look for a replacement engine. I'm keeping my eye out on craigslist and ebay but here is my question... What engines will bolt right up to my mower and have the same electrical components as the original engine that was on it. The kohler had just a three prong voltage regulator. Can I get any kohler engine between 13-15 hp? Only kohler command pro...kohler command... What Are my options? I really want something that I can just bolt on, hook up the few wires and go. I don't want to worry about rewiring or anything like that unless I have the right information so that I know what I'm doing.

Here are the original engine specs:

    Model- CV13T
    Spec No- 21520
    Displ (cc) 398
    Serial- 2831303131

Thanks so much for any help!

I'm thinking any CV vertical crank motor with a similar spec number should be a drop in fit.
Usually in the 13 - 15 hp range.
I'd suggest calling your local Kohler motor distributor and they should be able to say what will cross without any problems.

These are special engines used on walkbehinds. They have a charging coil that is setup to drive an electric clutch but WITHOUT the use of a battery...so they arent charging a battery or anything....just running a clutch. Briggs, Kohler, and Kawasaki all offer such a thing. If you want to get the machine out and working asap I would suggest getting a new engine that is setup for this or finding a used one off of a similar walkbehind.

The engine in that ebay link is for a walkbehind sure...but one that most likely doesnt have an electric clutch. Most Exmarks have not in the past. So that engine probably has no charging system at all...which would be even worse than the Kawasaki that isnt working for you now.

Ok, I found one that says it has a 15amp charging system. http://tewarehouse.com/PA-41582?sc=2&category=1088822

Thanks pugs for pointing that out. So I would guess that the charging system is universal and that it should hook right up. Please let me know any different.

I'm sorry, it says 15 amp ALTERNATOR. Other engines say 15 amp STATOR. Can anyone help me on this one? What is the difference. Will an engine with a 15 amp ALTERNATOR work for my pto clutch? Keeping in mind that my mower is a pull start with no battery....???
