take a truck jack with you to lift the mower for underdeck inspection.
Spindle, rust, wear , how clean and dirty the chamber, engine power responsive when playing with rabbit and turtle throttle, oil, all the wiring and of course how good all the belts in place with pulleys. Is mower vibrating like crazy when cutting?
I don't want a thousand plus hour engine with leaky signs and rusty vibrating machine in my garage. Just a thought, lol.

Is it a hydro or belt-driven machine?

Even though I have never owned a belt-driven machine, if I was to buy a used machine, I would tend to sway more towards a belt than a hydro. Replacing those hyddro pumps can be very expensive...more than the $1100 you're talking about.
