i have a old snapper edger that runs fine until you engage the blades. the motor is a 2hp briggs with a governor that hooks to the throttle and choke. the controls are a cable that says, slow/idle then fast and the most you can go puts it in choke. i sprayed brake cleaner in the carb. while it was running to try and clean it but i believe it is clean already, the air filter is clean. what is wrong as soon as it engages it dies? the rpms are medium when set at fast but they can go higher
Is it cutting out some or quitting altogether? If the governor is working freely and it is cutting out or quitting you probably have a carb that is partially plugged up. How long has it been since it was last run? If it has been a while it may have varnish in the carb.
Run the engine after you take the fuel line off the supply. If it starts running better as it runs out of fuel you could have a bad diaphram in the carb. Check your fuel lines for cracking while you are at it.
I would say that your carb is partially clogged up. Make sure the pickup screen that goes down into the carb is not covered in varnish and rust from the tank. I would also replace the diaphragm on the side of the carb. If this is bad it will pump little or no fuel.

I would agree since I am rebuilding my carb on my snapper aerator. It has the 5hp briggs which has the same carb as the 2hp. The carb has a diaphram that moves the gas from the tank to the carb and it floods when this is torn or cracked. it is a easy 1.69 fix.
It's possible that the engine is just plain tired. Check the compression, ifs it's low, theres your problem.
