I agree with the truck, but you can also find really good used large equipment.
Yea for stuff like bobcats, trackhoes, aerators you can go to the auction, and buy stuff from construction companies that buy stuff and use it on one job and take it to auction.
Your brand new truck is a used truck the moment you sign the paperwork and drive it off the lot. Then you've got years of payments and keep in mind the cost of full insurance on a brand new truck, and the affect you're employees will have on that. Large trucks I would always buy used unless it does more than pull equipment to a job and sit all day. It needs to be able to justify the daily costs of that newness.
My last truck I purchased 9 years old with 90k on it.
I'd go with new. The amount of deals and rebates out there is crazy. When I bought my F150 they gave me a 6 year service warranty and a 6 year bumper to bumper warranty. The price of the truck after rebates was very close to used.
Especially when dealing with a business the reliability and peace of mind of new cannot be overlooked.
If your confident it's been taken care of/runs good used. But thats a risk of a lemon. I've bought used and broke-even with the price of a new one in repairs. Plus with new you know how it will be treated and it will last you longer. Plus warranties/promotions are always a benefit.
Ill just go down the list. 93 3500 diesel from Tennessee bought with 210k and didn't have rust till I plowed with it this winter. 96 Chevy 3500hd diesel flat bed came with the other diesel for free as a parts truck but just needs a head gasket. No frame rust and 210k. 98 dodge 1500 bought with 128k now has 200k, 93 (i think) f250 118k with plow, 90 Chevy 2500 with plow, 93 Honda del sol 216k. I've spent $13,800 for all of them and including the plows. Kbb for all of then combined and selling the plows would be 24k. I've put about 2k into all them last year for repair, this year ill spend around 12k on then and that's repainting 5 trucks and fixing all body work and rebuilding the flat bed diesel to fix all 6.5 issueses and should be in the 450hp range. So basically ill have blue book into them and they won't devalue for 4ish years. My thought is buy stuff at the end of depreciation and buy them for dirt cheap and put a couple k into them and bring them up to Kbb and they will hold their value until you get rid of them. To me buying around 100k if about the worse because that's when a lot of major stuff goes bad. Ball joints, timming belt/chain, valves if not taken care of, transmission, rear end, sensors and bla bla bla bla. So far in my experience at the 200k if they are in good shape means they have had good owners and usually they have fixed a lot of known issues by then and replaced it with a better parts. What I've had to deal with are sensors, solenoids, and u joints and the occasional bearing.

I buy new really like the warranty, when I spend as much buying little parts here and there, I would rather just make payments and never miss a snow or a job, my entire clientele of snow removal customers is from guys running trucks that don't run.
I guess it is all about what you find. I prefer to pay cash for every truck we get and that may mean searching and building the truck we need. So we end up buying used and trying to find the right truck that can be built to our specs. Our recent truck started out as a rental fleet truck that they used to deliver with. It was a GMC W4500 with 80k on it with a 14 foot bed with a lift gate. Pics to follow.
