1998 Chevy 2500 6.5 Turbo Diesel?

i found this truck for sale and i'm very interested in it. I don't know much about the chevy diesels. Are they dependable, do they get good fuel mileage, are there any problems that they are notorious for. If there is ANYTHING else you guys could think of i would appreciate it. This truck has everything I am looking for but I just am not too familiar with chevy.

How good of a deal? Far as I know, they are good trucks, however you dont see many on the highway...

I bought a 92 chevy 2500 6.5 turbo, 5 speed manual, 4 wd and its been a good purchase for me. I get any where from 15 to 18 mpg towing a 16' trailer. Mostly mowing equipment but often I pull my 6000# tractor and it tows that fine.
Now, the bad thing I hear (but not experienced myself) is that on the mid 90's models, they went with an electric injector pump that wore out fast. PM Alvery (if he is still around), He had quite a bit of bad luck with his.

there asking 12500 but i think i can get it for around 11500 or 11000. I know the dodge cummins are nasty and fords are good also but i don't know too much about chevy.

i hope you forgot a decimal point on those #s nothing but trouble with 6.2 and 6.5. my ranger out pulls my 6.2. good fuel mileage though is all i can say. go with ford. all the other lawn guys around here have been switchin to ford

Save your money and use the 12grand to by a 97 Ford PSD. Even with a full banks kit the 98 6.5 TD in a Chevy can't out pull or mpg a stock 7.3PSD. Those engines truly are dogs. I had a 1984 GMC with the 6.2, and while it was no barn burner, it is still on the road in the town where I live with over 300,000 miles on it. Used daily by a local roofer. Only thing I, and everybody that has owned it since, has had to do is a new starter about every 18 months.

yes actually i'm also looking at a 97 F350 7.3 psd. I wish it had the extended cab, which i need. I have also heard good things about the dodge cummins diesels. How are they on mpg and all that good stuff?

Cummins do well on mileage as long as you have a manual. The autos are equipped with garbage torque converters. All the brands are good in their own regards, just find the one you enjoy driving/get best bang for the buck on.

I am a big fan of Chevy but stay away from the 6.5L. Had two of them. They go through injector pumps like a fat man through potatoe chips...and they are not cheap.

k thanx, yea i'm intentionally looking for an auto, 1 less thing to worry about when i'm hiring someone. I have a manual now and finding people that know how to drive it is sometimes a pain. Do the ford 7.3 psd get like 20 mpg or what?

My 6.0L PSD gets an overall average of 18mpg, I get 20 empty, and 16 towing.

My 99 PSD gets 17 empty around town with a heavy foot, 18.5 driving easy and staying at 55 or below. Towing my 3 horse gooseneck that weighs 11,000 pounds loaded I get 13 running 65 mph on the interstate. Towing a 96 Cutlass on a 4200 pound 12,000#GVW tilt deck equipment trailer at 50-55 for 68 miles on two lane I got 15.1mpg.

Definitely steer clear of the 6.5 diesel-notorious for fuel pump problems. I have two dodge trucks with the cummins diesels. My '96 has almost 300,000 miles and the only thing I do to it is change the oil and filters on schedule. It has been the best truck I have ever owned (other than my '05 cummins diesel). I won't bull**** you and tell you that you will get 30 miles to the gallon but I honestly do get about 14-15 mpg pulling my 25' trailer through city conditions. On the open road (interstate to Florida) I got right at 21 mpg with that truck.
