hello everybody, first time logging in. looking to seed my new lawn this fall and i've got a thrower lined up but not sure how much i need to cover say 1,ooo sq. ft. would like to get good coverage. would like you guys advice on do's and dont's. i've slit seeded and overseeded before but never actually used a chopper. thanks!

None, I have never in 5 years used straw because all it does is make a great big mess. Use a high quality seed and plenty of it, and cover your cost there and skip the straw, it's all the same in the end with less bs.
As for how much seed? 100 pounds / acre is light, 200 pounds / acre is heavy.
An acre is 43,560 square feet, so 25 pounds per 1/4 acre is light, 50 pounds per quarter is heavy.
A 1/4 acre is roughly 10k square feet, maybe 11k...
You want to make SURE you got good grass, then go heavy.
Don't forget some starter fertilizer and lime or calcium.

I agree on the straw. Just keep it watered. As far as the seed, there is no definitive answer to that. it all depends the type of seed it is. Different grasses require different amounts, because there is much more seed per pound. The starter fert. is always a sure thing, but don't go throwing lime down unless you know you need it. Too many people put it down and/or recommend putting it down unnecessarlty. Not enough is better than too much.
New around here, but Scrap the Straw and Use A Penn Mulch like product.
You will get around 750 sq ft at a cost of 15-20 dollars depending on which product you use.
OR better yet, use a green Mulch mat over your seed. It might cost more, but if your not renting a Blower, and buying straw, it may be close and your lawn will at least be green until germination. Both will hold moisture better than straw , and At 1000 sq ft, will be nothing to apply.
