we have both a pintle on a 18' equipment trailer and a 2'' ball on a 16' and 14' trailer

what is the benfits and downsides of both i havent really noticed any except i think the pintle beats on the truck more even with trailer brakes it knocks and pushes and pulls on the trucks

I like the pintle, simply because it's easy to back up to and hitch on to.It is also very hard, if not near immpossible to unhook a pintle hitch accidently. Yes it does push on the truck, but I still like it better.

Pintle hitches pivot better and therefore make it better to travel over uneven terrain with.

Personally I do not think a ball hitch is all that unsafe assuming you are using one properly rated for the load you are towing. I see way too many people tow very heavy equipment with a cheesy ball/receiver combo only rated for 5000-6000 lbs.

I think it pushes on a truck just as much as a ball hitch. It is the same weight pushing the truck. I like pintles better because I feel much more safe with them and they are so easy to hook up. I am switching my dump trailer over to one realy soon. I have never had a problem with ball hitches, but like Eclipse said, it is too easy to overload them when you don't have the right people using them. I feel perfectly safe with my ball hitch on my 2500 lb. boat set up, but not so much on my dump trailer.

pushes and pulls on the trucks
EVERY trailer does this...ball or pintle...

I have a pintle hitch that is also a ball hitch on my bucket...best of both worlds!!!

I have a 2" ball/pintle combination setup for my trailer and when I rent trailers or chippers I have the pintle available without switching hitches. I wish they would make the spring loaded hitches like on the big truck available for 3/4-1ton trucks like mine to reduce some of that slide hammer on the launches and braking.

yeah we have the 2'' ball/pintle combo on my truck but just a 2'' ball on the others but have spare pintles to swith if needed becasue like you said rental trailers and chippers are mostly pintle

I tend to disagree with the guys that say that a pintle doesnt push the truck around more than a ball. These guys must have never pulled a pintle with a pickup. Turning, stopping, and accelerating all jerk around the pickup. Granted, if you maybe had a very heavy trailer with a TON of tongue weight, it might not move at all. But, every one I've ever pulled slammed the truck all around in the corners at least......:waving:

Does a pintle allow you to have a better turning radius? Just curious.

you can definetly tell the difference when you have a skid loader on a pintle behind you compared to a couple mowers on a ball hitch
I should hope so with all the additional weight:hammerhead: ...That is a poor comparison for pintle and bll...

Now you all have me worried that switching my dump trailer to a pintle hitch from a ball is going to loosen every bolt on my truck and the ones rolling around in my head!
