I am tired of paying dealer prices for my Kohler oil filters $10.50. I was at Autozone and had them look up a match and they had a STP filter for $3.50. Do any of you run cheaper oil filters. I change my filters every 50 hours. Is the STP filter okay to use?

If the engine is under warranty no way. I don't know who makes stp oil filters. There are a few companies that make them and alot that stick their name on them. Wick is on of the largest. I would use a high quality filter that meets oem requrements. Just because they match up doesn't mean your getting the same level of protection. I would use OEM until the warranty ran out then use a HIGH QUALITY filter of your choice. I don't think you will save much money getting another high quality filter. You can shop around, I pay about $8.00 for Kohler filters. This is one area (oil and filter) that saving money shouldn't be your main concern. Quality oil and filters is a must. I don't know who makes Kohlers filters either but I'm sure some one on this board does. I would get the best filter reguardless of cost. Cheaper than an engine lost to a bad filter which does happen.

I would try a different dealer. I paid $7.50 for mine at the dealer. Mow More.com wants more than that plus shiping. I also recomend you use the proper filter. It may be a few bucks now but mega bucks later.

what's the kohler number for the filter you have?
The most common is 52 050 02, But there is a long version 277233 also.

I purchased a purolator L10240 or L10241 cant remember. I ran the filter for 50 hours and I didnt have any problems, not to say that the damage may show up later from not filtering properly. BTW that was on a kohler 20 hp. and that filter was about $3.50 at the auto parts store

I know Wix makes filters for Carquest and NAPA and possibly others. I stock up on filters when NAPA and Carquest when they have their spring farm filter sale. As an example, I bought 24 NAPA Gold #1394 for Kawasaki's (also fits my Camry) for 2.44 each. Just a thought. Check with your local outlets to see if they have that opportunity available. At the same time I load up on air and oil filters for all my automotive and repair requirements.

Some automotive oil filters have check valves in them to keep the valve lifters from draining (or something like that). I've heard that, for this reason, you should never run these on the hydraulic system on mowers. Don't know about the engine... Any thoughts?

Before I go on, let me say I DO follow maintenance schedules and I also run at least synthetic blend (and sometimes full synthetic) motor oil in the below engines (I NEVER run conventional oil in them).

That having been said...
I've been running Advance Auto Parts number AA3614 ($2.88) on both my Kohler 15hp CV15t's for over a year now, I also run AA oil filters on my '88 bmw 325 and never a problem.

I recently acquired a 25hp Kawasaki on my Everride, and the AA-4967 fits that (also $2.88).

Yes, I get tired of paying big money for stupid parts, too.

p.s.: The ONLY time I do not run synthetic oils is during the critical first 8 hours or so of break-in period for a NEW engine... You HAVE to run conventional oil during that time or the engine will not wear (meaning it doesn't break in).
p.s.s.: The reason I run at least synthetic blend is because I don't always remember to check the oil, and back in my first year I seized an engine. Nowadays, I don't care, I let the engines go for a month sometimes without checking the oil, synth is THAT good!
Matter of fact, you probably don't even need the oil filter, thou it does seal that hole rather nicely

I always run the cheap oil in my machines. Typically it is either Exxon or Citgo brand oil I get at Pep Boys or autozone - I don't buy the even cheaper no name stuff though.

I use 10w30 in my mowers, and never had a problem.

Not sure what number filter the kohlers take, but my 25 hp Kawasaki on my last mower used the same filter as my 2000 Toyota Echo and also my 2005 Toyota Camry. It is a very common filter. That mower has 1350 hours on it using automotive filters without a problem.

i use aftermarket filters. no problem. most are built to meet or exceed OEM. 3.50 small filter 5.50 large filter. everytime we go to NAPA or O'Rielly's we're buying aftermarket.

Ok,

Who is going to be the one that says that many aftermaket, especially imported and reboxed, filters do not filter down to the same micron as most of the oem-leaving suspended particles in the oil that quicken wear. Then discuss the foreign matter found embedded in the media of many new filters. And then, mention that that much of the aftermarket filter material is inferior and is subject to heat/time deterioration. Oh, and there is that filter bypass thing that happens fairly frequently.

10.50 for a Kohler filter is a bit absurd. Especially when MSRP is like 7.50 or 7.75 unless it varies around the country. I have not run into any problems on the warranty side relating to oil filters. Usually if the problem is oil related, its the customers fault because they ran it without oil.

But if it were my engine I would run OEM filters at least until the warranty runs out.

I am curious...does anyone here get on that Kawasaki program where if you run their oil it doubles the warranty or some BS? I doubt they get many takers on that deal...I am sure that oil is not cheap.

List price from Kohler doesn't vary, The suggested retail price for the 25 050 01-S is 8.99 from Kohler and thats what it states "suggested". Looks like dealers price where they want for their area.

I have heard that even though name brand companies make filters and label for others, they do sometimes make them to the cheaper specs. So it would be possible to have a filter labeled "Joes filter Co." but made by Wix. Wix would be the selling point for Joe. Joe would neglect to tell you he specified to Wix to use half the paper, use the cheapest paper and so on. I am sure this happens with many products. I have called to order oil and been told they have a special on oil made by Valvoline. But labeled something else. Oil is one area they can spec out the additives they want. So you could get less additives and still meet spec. Hope that made sense.

As for warranty, the Magnuson Moss act states that any item that would not be replaced free of charge from the manufacturer cannot void your warranty.
In other words because they do not provide oil filters for free during warranty, because they are considered a wear item an aftermarket filter cannot void your warranty. Further, I believe they are not supposed to state that it will.

I hope this made sense.

I use Wix and Briggs filters I purchased during pre season in bulk. For hydraulics I try to stay to OEM w/kubota but my John Deere stuff I cross to Wix. Toro Hydraulic filters are less money from a Parker dealer.

What is that part number for? Cant seem to find that one on Kohlerplus

As for the aftermarket stuff...it probably wont void the warranty. However lets say your aftermarket air filter suffers a manufacturing defect that allows dirt to be injested and blows the engine. Not the engine manufacturers problem. Just a for instance.

The likely hood of this happening is probably rare, but it is possible.
