Not having much luck with some of the cheap oil filter wrenches. Broke one today on a Kohler oil filter. Any good suggestion on what works best on ZTR's? What about the 3 prong gadgets I'm seeing advertised? I have a Lazer and a Turf Tiger. There is a little room to work bu most wrenches (cheap) that I have used just don't get a good grip. Thanks.

If you are stuck, a big pair of channel lock pliers will work. What doesn't work for me are the cap like filter wench that you use with a ratchet, many of the filters I encounter are on so tight that that style will just spin on the end of the filter. Cloth, metal or rubber straps wenches are good. Personally, I like the metal strap wenches.

I've been using wrenches as below for years, Have three different sizes. The ratchet style is good for hard to reach places. They can be picked up at any NAPA auto parts store for less than 20 bux.....

don`t put the oil filter on with a wrench just hand tighten it then you will be able to get it off without a wrench. i do this all the time works great for cars and mowers, that is if you change your oil regularly
That's great if you have a grip like Hercules  But if you are one of those guys that can't even open a twist off cap on a bottle of Bud...Well I would still give it a 1/4 turn with a wrench

When we were doing maitanance on the ditch witchwes at the end of winter I needed 2 off size ones. Ended up with 1 pair that looks like channel locks ( adjustable) works for all sizes , grips great. Was like $35 thou. When Im at the shop next Ill look for a name on it.

What's the complaint about the cap-type oil filter wrenches such as shown on this site?

I've used most of the other styles too, but I feel the cap-type are the best. The strap and plier types others are recommending can deform the filter housing if the previous guy used too much muscle installing it, and when that happens you really have a problem getting the filter off. It has happened to me, but never when I was using a cap-type. I'm not trying to start an argument, but I am curious to know why others don't prefer them, as I do. The only thing I can think of is that there are too many different sizes.

Thats my main beef with the cap type. You have too many different sizes of filters which requires a whole set of filter caps.In all my years as a mechanic I have tried every type and always come back to the plier style.Yes occasionally you get a filter that was put on too tight but they always come off.If you are doing your own maintenance and installing the filters yourself you shouldn't have to deal with them being too tight again. But if you like the cap style and already have the kit ,might as well keep using it.Thats my 2 cents.

So what if the band and strap filter wrench deforms the filter you are removing, you are not going to reuse it.:) My problem with the cap type is that it "will slip" when some one has over tighten the filter.
