I see this all the time and i just cant help but laugh. Today i was driving down the road and saw a crew of guys doing the maintenance for an HOA. The guy weed eating was walking backwards and still had 1/2 mile to go. I use to be one of these guys that walked backwards. I know it is very time consuming and also hurts my back. What do you do?

I walk whatever way is necessary... If there's a lot of growth, like I'm trying to knock down several weeks of growth, then walking backwards is the most efficient way because it throws all the cut debris out of the way. I can walk backwards about as fast as forwards, just have to have good periphial vision to keep track of things behind me, lol!

I do it - depends on where I am at in my whip cycle. I'll walk backwards to do a swath correctly as opposed to walking to the other end of the swath, wasting time, to walk forwards - along a curb for instance.

I never really thought of it before, but I guess I do a lot of walking backward while trimming. Like DA said, it just depends on which is more convenient at the time. Probably shouldn't though as there are safety risks involved with walking backward.

I always walk backwards unless I happen to be clearing a fairly large open area. But when I am cleaning up a culvert, or trimming along a fence or building, I am almost always going backwards/sideways backwards. How can you not? The left side of the trimmer is the trimming edge. At least it is on my trimmers.

I only go backwards while edging. Trimming is usually fowards.

I walk backwards around beds to keep the trimmings blowing back at me. If I do a ditch, or something big, I go forward. I also do fence lines walking backwards. It now feels weird going forward.
This is me as well.

If you walk forward against chain link fence right handed, it'll constantly be pulling your trimmer into the fencing.

If you're trimming a curb with cars (parking lot) and am trying to get under the lip of the cars, you walk backwards because it pulls the grass back into the turf area, doesn't shoot it up under the cars.

I'm confused?!?
My trimmer heads spin counter-clockwise, I am right handed, walk forward with the trimmer on my left or out in front of me.
The only way I could trim backwards with any speed would be to put the trimmer head on my right with my arms crossed to try and run the throttle?!?!?
Is this a left-handed thing or what?
Am I really that green?
Help.

i walk whichever way is necessary. when going along a fence or wall i usually walk backwards. i seem to be faster backwards, and i use less string.

I'm a righty only and I always walk forward..either left to right holding the trimmer across my body-ALL BACKYARDS, or holding the engine under my right armpit and the head in front of my left foot while walking.
