I have 1987 Grasshopper 1822D with 1600 hours. Over the last couple years the left transmission pump was getting progressively slugish and now, as it gets hot it basically quits, especially on hills. I took it apart but the pump is so simple I even can not get how it actually works. The hydrolic fluid is ok. What can I do besides buying $700 new pump(#391429)? Who made these pumps? Are there any rebuild kits or can machine shop resurface some of the internals? Are there any parts diagrams for the pump internals? Any inexpensive source of parts or anyone with unwanted old Grasshopper pumps for sale(The same transmission pump was used on old models 1212,1622 and 1822s)?
Any info is greatly appreciated.

That is an Eaton. Did the balls fall out when you took it apart? If so, do you know EXACTLY which hole EVERY ball goes back into? If they are out, and you do not know the EXACT hole they came from, you are done. Throw it in the trash.
Those are rebuildable only by a qualified Eaton trans. technician. Even then, some rebuild shops will not touch them. They can not be remachined to repair them.
Sometimes Grasshopper has rebuilt ones at the factory, but, not very often.
Seems to me like the price on new ones, is now closer to $1000.00/side.

Thank you very much for responses, guys! I'm sure balls went exactly where I took them from. I mowed yesterday and transmission works, like in the past, relatively well until hot. After I make few(10+) passes up and down on 25' 30 degree slopes and drives become hot(oil is changed and plentyful) left drive becomes weak. Still it lets me to get most of the job done. And while I understand it is kind of extreme mowing for my '87 1822D I need the job done and keep this awesome mower running forever. Anyways, considering that pumps work while cold, can I do maybe some adjustment? I noticed that on both drives(but left is worse) there is considerable play where short swiveling lever enters the pumps on the top. It looks like a bushing(which I positively could not reach to replave) is greatly worn out. If not, the new drive from Grasshopper is $699.00 plus tax. Maybe, I could directly contact Eaton for replacement parts or pump to cut down on cost - even $400-500 range is reasonable. What is my chance to find used drive(s) from older 1212,1622, 1822K models- they appear to use identical pumps. Thank you.

I am interested. But before, I need make sure those are correct drives - I am doing a lot research on Eaton pumps and they produced three models during the same period- models 6,7 and 11. Those that you have are right and left side? Do you have original mower manual to confirm the Grasshopper part numbers for drives? What year of lawnmower is and how many hours on drives? Are both drives fed hydraulic fluid by a single centrally located tank? Or each drive has an individual hydraulic fluid tank attached?
Where in the country and state are you and how much you are asking? How much is s/h to NC,28806? If price is appropriate I'd buy both drives. Thank you, much.

I believe this mower is 1986. It has the single master cylinder for feed. Both drives pulled good (the left one seemed a bit stronger) but no problem heating up. Pulled just as hard after an hour of mowing as when you started.
I'll check the motor (to see if it shot craps) if it did then I'll set a price on these (I'll be very fair), I purchased this mower in July, so I'm just trying to get some money back out of it. I'm in Kansas City, Missouri. If you want, contact me directly @ Cr65go@aol.com.
