Channel Drain Help

We installed 80' of this stuff the other week, and I need a type of caulking to go between the outside edge of this grate, and the neighboring sidewalk.
I am thinking something along the lines of what contractors use for expansion joints when they build by different phases. the thick rubbery stuff.

Anyone know whats that called, and where I could get it?

I had the same problem. Laid the drain but the supplier had no caulking (that was recommended by manufacturer).

I used "big stretch" in gray. It was a year ago and it still bonded. Gets cross traffic and was in a commercial install.

Caulking in a tube. Unfortunately I could only find the small tubes. Had to buy a few cases. I bought it at the local true value. I was working with two concrete borders so the drain had little movement. If you have one side that is a grass border I wonder if there will be too much drift?

I notice it says not to use on heavy traffic areas such as sidewalks. Worked in my application. I put it on a drain to an entrance of an apartment building.

Does it need to bond with the drain? All you really need it to do is fill the crack and bond with the concrete. Personally I have never tried it with a channel drain, but I have worked with various polyurethane concrete sealants and caulkings and they are super durable. Next step up would be an epoxy, which I have also used, but once again, not on channel drains. Probably over kill for this project.

Worth noting here, if the channel drain has any play in it, and will be subject to heavy traffic, I wonder if there is any filler that would really last. Maybe just fill the crack with sand + morter mix.

When I was a kid I worked for a company that replaced expansion joints. We did Patrick Air Force base in Satelite beach FLA. What they used was a 2 part mix that hardened when added together.

I was going to mention it doesn't need to bond with drain, nothing is going to bond with the drain and last.

Sand and morter is fine, but I would go back to the big stretch. More expensive, but a lot easier.

You might want to contact a building supply company such as this one in Dallas. http://www.adamssupplydallas.com/ They will have, or be able to tell you what would work the best. At least there product will be better than anything you can purchase at the big box stores.

John, call a roofing supply and get some NP-1, is often used as expansion joint in concrete. I used some when I did the addition on my house - ran a few beads on the vertical edge of the existing slab where it came into contact with the new slab.

Comes in 2 flavors - white or gray - in caulking tubes. Just don't get any on you - it is a pain to get off.

You need a product called sl-1. It is a polyeurethane used for sidewalk joints, etc. Can't remember the company that makes it. The SL stands for self leveling. It comes in an orange caulk tube in reg or large size. I get it at my local contractor lumber supply. Never seen it at Lowes of home depot. Make sure to use a backer rod of the appropriate size and stuff it into the crack. leave about 1/2 to 3/4 inch above the backer rod to fill with sl-1. This is the grey rubber stuff you see used in commercial parking lots etc. NP-1 is similar but not self leveling. It is more like caulk and not as easy to use for your application. I got what Kiril suggested. From HD, made by PL for masonry flexible polyuerethane blah blah. its gray colored too, just like the grates:) 6 bucks a tube though. bought 8, hope i dont need more.
