What should the engine be turning with no load, wide open throttle. It is on a Simplicity Cobalt. It is doing 3380-3390, sounds like it should be higher. Dealer told me 2800, thanks but this isn't my first barbeque. Anybody know for sure?

Should be set at around 3650 rpm's. Your dealer is way off with 2800. That's about 1/2 throttle!

They are usually a little tricky to set, use the long bolt with nut on it to set where the throttle stops. Takes some trial and error. If you have a donaldson air filter it will be nicely in the way.

Yeah 3650-3850 with no load. Your dealer is confused with his numbers. Maybe he ment to say 3800.

Kohler even recommends 3850 with no load if your using a bagger. But 3650 like pugs says is good and your engine will last longer.

Thanks guys! I knew it didn't sound like it was spinning fast enough. I will adjust it tomorrow. Is my Mac Smart Tach sufficient enough to set it? It was telling me between 3380-3390 today. My old Ferris 21 Kawi was set right at 3600. I know the RPM is very important on Z-turns, makes a big difference in tall grass/wet grass, kills blade tip speed. Do I need to adjust the governor? It seems to recover right away if I move the throttle lever at all, no pause or lag in response. This one doesn't have the Donaldson 2-stage filter like my old one, everything is pretty much out in the open, easy adjustment.

Got her crankin right at 3700 on the nose, sounds way better too. I did this with the advice of two Exmark/Toro dealers in the area. It was good and hot before I adjusted it so it shouldn't creep up or lean out. Pretty straight forward using the info on Kohler's website. Just access the support/manuals/service manual area for your particular engine. I also had to adjust the throttle cable a smidge to have enough travel to hit the reset hard stop. Purrs like a kitten now. Thanks guys.

Kohler really doesnt recommend anything. I actually looked just to see in the service manual. They kinda leave it up to the OEM. They do have low speed numbers but even there thay say to use them or refer to the OEM.

Kawasaki service manuals are a bit more specific and I think say 3600 plus or minus 150.

The only thing I ever run at 3700-3800 are well worn engines on generators. You need them to maintain 3600 RPM under load so that they put out 60Hz. We generally set them up on half of rated load and set the RPM for 60Hz that way when the load is small they will be a bit high and when the load is heavy a bit low...but allways close to 60. Then when there is no load they may run up to 62-65Hz on well worn engines. Brand new though probably 61 with no load down to 59 at full load.

Sounds great. Glad you got the problem taken care of!

Unless the OEM can tell you by their equipment model number there is no way to know the RPM without the engine spec number. All Kohler engines RPMs are spec number specific.
