everytime i turn off my mower either it be cold or hot it has a bad sound comeing from the engine. it kinda sounds like it grinding against something. it is a 12.5 hp briggs and stratton engine, it is only 3 month old. even when we got it and turned it on for the first time it made the sound. tell me whats up with it, heres the link.

Sounds like a normal Briggs to me. Noisy and loud. Nothing to worry about continue working. Don't idle it down when you shut it off. Always shut off small engine at half throttle. This may take some of the noises you are hearing away.

im not going to try to fight with you guys. I have been mowing my yard for 5 yrs and mowing others for 3 yrs. the mower i was useing up to 3 or 4 months ago was a murry mower with a 11 hp briggs and it was 10 yrs old with the same motor from stock. the only reason it died was that i ran it out of oil. and the engine that was on this before this engine was a 13 hp briggs which was also stock, and the mower is 12 yrs +. so i dont think briggs are bad engines i just think they arent as good as other brands like kawi.

Briggs single cylinders have a built-in engine balancer. It's a fat counterweight actuated by the crank and pinned to the block. Pin wear may cause slap and knocking noises though in this case I'm not sure. The engine would need to be opened up to check this.

The other possibility is a worn upper bushing causing the flywheel to strike the ignition though I highly doubt this is the case.

One more thing: dude, go to school and dump this mowing. An honest advice from someone who's been there and done it.

Maybe a shot in the dark, but is your pull cord a little short? Sometimes when they are short, they make a funny sound when turning off. Honda mowers always make that sound when the pull cords are too short. Anyhow, check it out but I dont think its anything to worry about.

Just a few ideas here. First disconnect the plug wire so we have no accidental starting. Since you said this engine has only been on there 3 months then check to make sure all motor mount bolts are tight. Then check the pulley on the bottom of the crankshaft to make sure it is not loose or possibly the key-way is worn. If all is good at the engine side then check all drive pulleys on the mower deck as well as any idlers. You also need to check to see if if the spindle bearings are ok and make sure the blade(s) are tight and fitted correctly on the spindle shaft(the little start shaped part). If all this checks out and the blades are not hitting anything under the deck then check to make sure the muffler bolts are tight and the blower hosing(top cover is not scrubbing anything.Just a few ideas to try and help. Remember this is ..Just my half-fast opinion......

The engine balance in these single cylinder briggs engines are noisey. Trust me and Topsites we've been doing this along time. The motor is fine kid. We're not trying to insult you here. Just keep working with it and keep oil in it and the filters change the Briggs will last a long time for you with proper maintenance. Sythetic oil would be a plus. But THE ENGINE IS NOISY BECAUSE OF ITS DESIGN THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. Single Cylinder OHV engines from BRIGGS these days make those noises.

Sounds to me like the blade might be loose or the blade adaptor is not right. I would first remove the blade and check the adaptor and then remount the blade making sure it is tight. And while you are under there check the engine mounting bolts. Let us know how it turns out.

I agree with the above post B&S engines are very noisey, I would low throttle to half throttle down the motor before shutting it off and its been my experience that briggs motors run hot, so switching to a synthetic oil may cool the motor a little bit more and reduce the noise, not eliminate it mind you, but reduce it... We started putting synthetic in our briggs motors a few years ago on some of our personal residential machines and in my opinion it seems to help... Just check the oil before you pull the cord everytime and your B&S will run for awile, good luck with it.
