I've got a cheap bench grinder that isn't cutting it anymore. What brand, hp, size, wheel grit would you sugget for blade sharpening? I'd love one of those magna matics, but just not in the budget right now. Are they really that much better than a bench grinder?

a dedicated blade grinder is so much nicer than a bench grinder. my irst grinder was a lesco unit. and it did a great job. then I got an rbg http://www.rbggrinders.com/ with the ruby wheel love it...I cannot comment on the magna, haven't used it. but the nice thing about any dedicated blade grinder, once you set your angle....and cut all your blades to the same angle it is so much easier and faster than sharpening your blades on a bench grinder... the key being consistency...

A regular bench grinder like a Benchcraft is fine...go with atleast the 3/4 hp. Yes, dedicated grinders are great, but for many, the cost factor just doesn't add up.

12 grand on a mower to produce your product and less than a 1/10th of that price to make sure that the instrument DIRECTLY in contact with the grass is in superior working order to produce your finished product and the cost factor doesnt add up? Just doesnt make good sense to me.

Magna Matic is the way to go. I am getting one this fall for sure. Heck a couple fall landscaping jobs and its paid for. I just dont get it with all the bickering back and forth on here about this mower and that mower and this engine and blah blah about the money and yall skimp yourselves on the cut and the life of a blade?

I'm happy with a 4 1/2" angle grinder with 36-40 grit flap discs.
I was happy with my die grinder as well until I spent the 300 bucks on a lesco unit... it really made sharpening the blades much easier, much more consistent and much faster. Also when you have multiple employee's sharpening by having the dedicate blade grinder you end up with consistent blades/angles no matter whos sharpening. and I'd venture to say you end up getting better life out of the blade as you are sharpening it correctly each and every time back to the same angle.

Its no different than those who swear up and down that they edge with a string trimmer just as good as a dedicated stick edger......

Marc - which rbg are you using?

Anyone - what is the best model grinder for someone who is using Walker blades and standard high lift blades on the ZTR. I run a hustler and walker mower.

Hello grassmasterswilson,

I'm sure others will chime in with information also, but here are a few main points of why we are that much better than a bench grinder.

Sharpening time of 60 sec to 2 min
Consistent 30 degree angle (greatly increases your blade life always keeping the same angle every sharpeneing)
Simply single crank adjustment for adjusting the angle
Enclosed design keeps sparks contained and shop cleaner
All safety guards and vac hook-up included (all OSHA/ANSI approved)
All tools included
Cooler sharpening due to our rigid design, wheel choice, motor speed etc
No dressing required
No limits to cutting edge lengths
Amazing customer support and educational resources direct from the factory
Made in the USA since 1958

Keep in mind our equipment will outlast the mowers you'll service with the balancers and sharpeners.

Let me know if you have specific questions.

I have a question, we have been thinking about getting one of your sharpeners and balancers. What would we need for 3 60" ztr's?

Thanks

Same, I also don't mind tossing blades with corners that are too rounded to be sharpened easily.

How do the dedicated blade grinders work on mulching blades? I just can't imagine them being efficient. Do you sharpen the outer portion of the blade on the blade grinder, then finish on the bench grinder? Can't visualize it...

then go out and buy a car lift to maintain your car too.

takes a bit more than a car lift to work on your car.

I felt that the dedicated blade grinder was a wise investment...
takes more then a $1200 blade sharpener to maintain a mower. I am all for sharp blades. But how can all the steel and electronics of an automobile lift only cost $2200 new and a little blade sharpener cost how much? I am sure they are good products and all but why spend all that money when a jack and a bench grinder can do the same for the occasional repair? Just a thought.
