I set my mower on it's highest setting and mow the Monkey Grass. That cuts it down to about 4'' using my mower. I always bag the cuttings so the clippings do not end up all over the beds. I just charge my usual hourly rate for this work.:)

I may be able to do some of it with the mower. There is a border and the house on the other side. Would it hurt to use the trimmer? This is a clean up job and may become a regular customer for mowing.

I see you are from Texas. Whatever method you use be careful not to cut off new growth (looks like fingers coming out of ground).

We cut back, a lot of it in our area, liriope with string trimmers. Work from the outside-in (so clippings are thrown into cut areas and you can see what your doing as you work through the liriope). Always keep the trimmer head positioned away from the house or anything (car, person, etc.) you don't want a rock or object to be thrown towards.

As long as no new growth to contend with, this is the fastest method for us.

i always just trim them with my timmer. if need be, blow them out of the beds and chop em up with your mower. works for me, generally i get about 20 bucks for about 80ft of monkey grass, takes no time at all, have em stickin out of the ground about 3-4 inches.

today I went to a new job to "clean up"...I knew they had about 30 big thick heavy wet liriope plants that needed cut way back...I have never seen such monsters....I could barely grab each one with both hands...they're never going to dry out this week and he wants this place cleaned up by weeks end....I wished I had some kind of monster hand shears that I could get under them with but I dont...I've done many of these before but none as thick and big as these....so...should I use the gas hedge clippers and go at them like cutting a cake and then once I get the sides off the cut down the main plant??? there goes my nice mew sharp edges on my Echo trimmer all to heck....like I said they're so soggy which is why I'm not sure how to approach this...thanks for answering this rather fundamental question that I shouldn't even have to ask....but I have to admit it when I'm not comfortable with an approach....problem I guess is really that I only bid that job at 2 hours...stupid stupid stupid...thanks

You might want to try a short reach hedge trimmer. I use Red Max, but echo and sthil have one as well. The blade speed must be fast enought to cut all the way through. I have also used hand shears. Good luck!
