I just got a brand new Exmark 52" 23hp Kohler. Well, I took it out to test it on my yard this weekend. I was cutting the grass (barely taking anything off the grass) when the mower suddenly died. So, I checked under the seat and saw 2 fuses there. One was blown. Replaced it, started mower, pulled PTO and then after a minute, the fuse blew and mower died. Replaced, started mower, pulled PTO and immediately died. Then, battery went dead and hard to charge. This is a brand new 2003 unit. Anyone have any ideas? As soon as the PTO is pulled, the mower dies and fuse is blown.

Take it to your dealer! However, you do have a short. More than likely a wire rubbing metal. If it only shuts off when you engage blades then a ground could be the problem. But take to dealer as electrical on mowers are a PIA to track down. It is worth the money even if not in warranty.

kinda weird you mentioned this- same exact thing happen to me with my Scag- Couger last week- My fuse harness some how melted a bit making wires touch- fixed my self- about 5 bucks- But that was an older mower- DONT TOUCH YOURS if its under warr.- let dealer mess with it.

If you need to run a little longer to get to dealer- bye-pass the fuse.- or do what I did put a fence staple in in fuse slot- woud'nt suggest though

Is it the clutch side, or the charge side?

Charge side your stater is shorting out.

Clutch side clutch is shorting out.

Being as I read you don't have a dead batt. it's the clutch side.

Fuse blows mower dies, does what it's designed to do.

Very simple, take to dealer and let them work on it for free.

Dealer came and picked it up yesterday. I'll let everyone know what it was in case anyone else has a similar problem. I just hope it doesn't take a week or more to get this fixed and back to me. It doesn't even have 2 hours on it and I'm itching to use it since my grass is starting to grow now...

jkr1,

Was the mower OK when just driving around w/o the blades engaged?

If so, then its probably in the PTO circuit, or may have something to do with the operator presence controls hooked up backwards or shorting out and slowly blowing this fuse.

I'm sure your dealer will find the problem. If this happens this season when your mowing, they will offer a loaner, right!? :(

Good Luck!

Jkr1, I am glad that your dealer came and picked up the mower and please do let us know what happens. They didnÂ’t give you an estimate on how long it would take or offer you a loaner? If you need to start cutting call the dealer and ask what they can do to help you out.

i had a similiar problem on my bunton 60 inch cut. seems the ground was so rough that the safety switch kept cycling. we just put a wire in it to keep it running. the engine kept running when you got off the machine .which was nice since we had to stop and get off it often.BUT I WOULD NEVER ADVOCATE SUCH ACTION. TAKE IT TO YOUR DEALER......

I never would count on a loaner machine.
Well when something like this happens, and if it happens in the height of cutting season, you'd better hope your dealer has a loaner! Its not like HE broke it, it was broke from the factory.

Not everyone has a backup ZTR(s) like you LGF!! :D
