The longer I do irrigation, the less I like the "advanced technology" add ons that come out. Strictly from a money making standpoint, every one of these devices is dead money. Rain sensors, soil sensors, solar syncs, weather stations, etc, etc. Just a simple example, I can get the hunter wireless rain clic with transmitter mount for collectively around $60.00, if I install it for $300.00-$400.00 I have basically put myself on the hook for this device for 5 years. If it presents any problems I am already losing money with one return visit. I basically have to build in an additional cost for it in quarterly irrigation services as a "cover my ass, just in case" method. This really applies across the board with all these little niche products that are at best marginally reliable. If they present any problem, they instantly become a loss of money. Soil sensors I won't even install because I don't care how reliable they are, the second a customer has a plant die or an area of grass that isn't growing as well I can already hear the phone call. "Well I paid, so and so amount to have these soil sensors put in which were supposed to guarantee that the plants and grass were in perfect conditions." Thanks, but no thanks, I don't care how great soil conditions are, there are far to many other variables that can affect plants and grass but ultimately the customer is going to point the finger at the irrigator who put in the magical soil sensors first.

That would be an EXTREMELY hard sell around here in the average residential install. Maybe on an ritzy estate. Or out East in the Hamptons (calling GreenMonster).
 
Every HUnter Rain Clik Ive installed over the course of the last few years, (maybe since 05') has been taken down and replaced with a hard wired unit, the original mini clik or the Irritrol wireless counterpart.

I cant remember many Irritrol units going bad...

I definitely prefer the hardwire miniclik over any wireless unit, as i will go to great lengths to make sure i
can install a hardwire unit over a wireless, so i wont have a call back.

Its definitely a POS.

And yes, ive had units go bad within months of installation.

You got to remember these things sit on the shelves in the supply house for MONTHS at a time sometimes.

I check date codes often while buying new products, I see heads and valves made as old as 2009 that are just moving off the shelves now....
 
All the advanced tech doesn't remove the need for management. Many people believe all that tech does .... but they would be wrong. It does however reduce the management, which in the long run pays off for the client.
True, problem is , most companies nowadys both in our indusrty and outside it dont test product enough. They let the marketplace be the testing ground.

I agree with that statement. In fact, from now on, if people want any add ons they will have these two choices.

1) All tech add ons will be completely at home owners risk and as the installing irrigation company we do not guarantee performance, longevity or warranty these products without quarterly service contract.

2) Quarterly service contracts will include functionality testing and adjustment review of all technical additions. We will honor manufacturers warranty and functionality of the device, however, we do not guarantee customer satisfaction based on PERFORMANCE of said device.
