Last week I saw an irrigation company doing an install on a new house. On a few locations,he was leaving almost 3 feet of funny pipe from the lateral to the sprinkler head. Is not that a bit much? I was under the assumption that 18" was the max that you should go.

Not sure there is any "rule", other than "use as much as you need to as long as it works"

Seriously though, on installs I think 18"-24" should be max. I have seen, and even done it myself, where when adding a head due to someone else's poor installs, I will run 3'-5' of it. But very rarely. Bash me all you want Leary, but it gets the job done.

I have also fixed other people's screw ups where they have tried running an entire zone on swing pipe, or just 3-5 additional heads off of it.

Couldn't find any info at the TORO site but RB says this:

Place lateral pipe into trench, measure
the distances between the heads as
indicated on the original design. Lay out
swing pipe from head back to the point
of lateral pipe connection (saddle tee,
PVC, or poly fitting). Cut swing pipe and
install in trench. Design calculations for
pressure loss should be considered when
using lengths longer than 36 inches. PVC
or poly tee, or elbow, should be at a 90Âş
angle to the finished grade.

80psi max as well. I've used funny pipe in drip or micro spray situations when I needed a more durable pipe for parts of the runs.

hell there plenty of time i will pull around a corner with 1 " and then pull 5-6 ft of funny pipe from the head to the lat.
One of the main reasons I don't like more than 2'-3' of swing pipe, is on the occasion that a lateral gets damaged, and rocks get in the pipe, the rocks usually get lodged in at the swing ell on the poly tee and block flow to the head. I hate digging up 5'-10' of swing pipe to find the tee and clean out the rocks.

Tell em to take the waste home with them, its theirs , that would have been their next raise.
I've used that line before....it's a great line.

In my mind there really is no excuse to have funny pipe waste unless the hard surface or object you're swinging over to isn't there.

Really our guys are pretty good now so I don't need to nit pick like in years past. But I still do need to keep them on their toes.

Were they near curbs or driveways? If so I'd say that is a pretty good decision. I'm not sure there is a limit to a funny pipe run except following the rules of basic hydraulics.
Two were near a walkway and two weer in the middle of the lawn but they were near trees. I guess they plan on moving them in the future for tree growth.

Just had one of them...............7' to the lateral thru a &%#$@ saddle tee that was fubar'

btw, hows the knee?

My favorite is when people use the funny pipe tee's and running pipe in excess of 10' ..... They'll need another sprinkler because some old lady says she has a dry spot over here, so not wanting to do it the right way and run pvc, they'll put a tee in the funny pipe and run some line to the new head... Then they wonder why the other existing head doesnt spray
as far as it used to...

Had one rotor a while back didnt have as good pressure as the rest of the system.. Did a little investigating... Rotor was funny piped with 12" or so of pipe, then 3/4" pvc ran for 40' ft or so, then went back to funny pipe into a funny pipe tee right at another rotor head, so you could imagine the water flow restrictions.....
