I know it's an odd post...but how do you guys usually strap down your equipment?

I usually secure the front 2 castors so the mower won'r move side to side, but if there was ever an accident, the mower would fly up in the air.

How do you guys strap them down?

I don't strap mine down, I know i should but i just don't care, i run a 60inch walkbehind and 2 60inch lazers on my 18 footer and they barely squeeze on the trailer to begin with, So im not worried about them moving, considering i only have about 2 inches from the back of my lazer to the gate.

I run a 60'' and 48'' turf tracer on 12 ft they rarely move even on Michigan's crap roads..

I got a bungee wrapped around my 22" to the side wall, and my 36 " and 52" are just in place with the parking brake on them.....the hold pretty tight

I can't believe somebody would drive around with equipment unsecure on Trailor.
Just because your parking brake is on, or you have a bungee cord on it is not going
to keep it from flying off your trailor if involved in a accident.

Picture you lawn mower flying off your trailor onto another car with kids inside.
Good luck with that.

Now picture the strap breaking.

If there was a inspection done on LCO'S to see who's mowers are strapped 95% would fail...

Faststraps from traillerracks.com. The only way to go.
I wouldent say its the "only way to go" seeing as i dont strap mine. so clearly its not the only way to go.

You know, this topic seems to come up on a more or less routine basis, and I always read the same kind of responses, like "mine hardly move", or "they fit so tight on the trailer, they aren't going anywhere", etc, etc, etc.

What a crock of crap! Is anyone actually so ignorant of the laws of physics that they think a bungee cord, or worse, gravity alone is going to restrain a 1,200 pound piece of equipment in an accident? As for Topsites observation that the straps might fail, well, I'm certain that is entirely possible. However, even though I'm not an attorney, and don't work for an insurance company, I'm relatively certain there is a legal term, "negligence". In other words, if you are found to be negligent, you can be sued out the ying-yang. If, on the other hand, you did your due diligence and secured your load properly, I'm guessing you would be in a much better position, liabilty-wise, in the event of an accident where displaced machinery wipes something, or someone, out.

Not strapping down your mowers every time you pull out on a public road is, in my opinion, simply lazy. I have used Fastraps ever since I bought my first Z and trailer, and secure each mower with two every time I load them. Does it take a little extra time? Sure. But I feel a lot better knowing that if I have to make some type of evasive maneuver in a hurry, that at in most cases at least, my mowers are going to stay on the trailer.

My friend that I used to help several years ago simply had a couple of 2X4's nailed to the trailer bed for the wheels to rest between. Kept the mowers from rolling, under normal conditions, but one day we were heading back from a job and he hit a dip in the road a bit too fast. The mower jumped completely off the trailer floor. Thankfully, it remained on the trailer, but sure made one heck of a noise when it hit, and could have easily damaged the machine.

You buy liability insurance hoping you will never use it, but if you do, you'll be glad you had it. You secure your equipment figuring you'll never have an accident, but if you ever do, you'll be glad you did.

By the way, the cheapest place I found to buy Fastraps is through Sportsman's Guide.

Well said!!

I strap the heck out of my equipment. You can bet your booty that you'll be mowing for free for the rest of your life if you are involved in an accident and your equipment goes flying off and injures or kills someone, simply because you haven't seen any reason to use straps since you haven't had any trouble up 'til an accident like that actually happens. A strap may break, but if it was in proper working order before it did, and you have done all you could to properly secure your stuff to the trailer, then you stand a much better chance of surviving in civil court, and maybe even in a criminal negligence case.

I wonder how many who don't strap down their equipment, insist on using hearing protection, guards on their trimmers, or discharge chutes on their mower for safety's sake?

I use at least one fastrap at all times when traveling on a "main road". Even when gassing it hard my super Z will shift considerably when not strapped down. After having it slide quite a ways back on the trailer a few times I made the fastrap purchase. The only time I dont use at least one is when i'm going literally just down the block where i'll be traveling usually no more than 20mph. yeah yeah time is money and it does take some time (like 5 freakin seconds) to strap one down but seriously, if you're going to be traveling fast at all and have an open trailer you really need to consider a couple fastraps. 60 bucks for a pair and you're set... piece a cake to install and take on and off.
