I've seen these for years, available in every country EXCEPT the US, but finally Maruyama has them available for the US. For large trimming jobs, like spending an hour+ in a HOA lugging a trimmer around, burning your arm, killing your back, I think a backpack mounted engine would be a pretty slick way to go!

Cons I see are the lack of being able to flip it upside down to edge, and possibly your reach under low trees and bushes...

If you have a Maruyama dealer I'm sure you can order one, but here's a few listed on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/251226095971?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Seems pretty slick for guys that have a lot of straight trimming to do, and they support a brush cutter head as well.

That's weird looking, but kinda cool. I could see that for alot of trimming, but not for residential yards.

guess I'm always the weird one when it comes to the idea of backpack trimmers. I really don't see the need for them.

maybe some guys would use them but I sure wouldn't. and I use a trimmer for an hour + straight, plenty of times through out the week. I have no problems using a trimmer for long periods of time.

that's just my $0.02.

When I was starting out the company I worked for had a Shindaiwa backpack. Can't recall the model but I think it was B35, BP35 or B45 ... something like that. The engine was on a pivot of a rather clumsy backpack frame.

Back them we used it for ditch mowing or any other extended slope jobs because it's easy to follow the terrain. You would move the shaft in a 9-1 o'clock fashion (hillside left) and get a lot of work done.

Apart from this job I hated the thing. For tall people, the absence of an engine counterweight meant you had to push down with your right hand to balance the head and get wrist fatigue within the hour.

It also took a lot of trailer space to haul around.

A backpack blower is used typically for long periods only when its cool out here. Yes you blow off a drive way or walks and perhaps have it on for 5-15 mins but thats about it other then spring and fall clean ups. This thing you would be using in the hot season and the thought of how sweaty and nasty your back would feel is making my skin crawl noooooo thank you.

With a 40cc engine I bet this thing can get a LOT done in short order.
Though, and while it seems obvious, but if a trimmer operator was to lose their balance, especially backwards...I know I'd rather drop my free trimmer than fall with this thing on my back.
