Hi all, In my extensive research, I'm noticing that some LCO's have mentioned gator mulching blades being used witha standard deck.

Am I mis-understanding their statements, or are they actually using a mulching gator blade with a non-mulching deck.

What kind of grass cutting experience can one expect using that blade in that scenario...???

Will a mulching blade expel grass out of the side chute as well as a high lift blade ...??

A gator blade is a mulching blade designed to be used with a side discharge or bagging set up. When used in conjunction with a mulching kit for a deck it causes a lot of blow out and clumping

This is correct and Oregon will tell you the same thing.

I also use wavy OEM mulching blades and sid discharge with them. It seems to work as well as the gators do under all conmnditions, and chops the clippings up even more. The discharge pattern is great and I am getting plenty of lift for a clean cut in one pass.

I know this is dumb but i have been mowing for 4-5 yrs now and i never knew they would work without a mulching kit. Do they struggle more or leave more stragglers under thick or damp conditions

I have had excellent results regardless of the conditions. Mine actually are lighter than the stock blades that came on my mower, so they spin easier. I'm speaking about the wavy mulchers. Gators definitely require less power to run IME.

Oregon's G6 blades are a higher lift Gator (than the originalGator 3in1 blades) designed primarily for side-discharging (and bagging). Their G5s are the same design, but a tad thinner, and therefore lighter.

I put my G5s back on today. I was a little disappointed in moist conditions last month...but since things have dried out I gotta say they do leave a nice cut and the clippings are more finely shredded.

I look forward to trying the G6 & G5 in some distant future.

But I must say, with the cost of the G6 much higher that that of the G5 blades, and the fact that I simply "do not cut in the wet", Looks like the G5 blades may very well serve my needs.

I look forward to applying everything I learn n this site......thanks....

Really! I never realized that. I had the Gators put on with the mulching kit when I bought my mower. After using it I complained to the dealer about the grass clipping escaping the front of the deck and landing on me. He said I was probably cutting too low for the height of the grass. I have been living with it since then. I will remove them right away and see if there is a difference. Thanks.
