I posted back in 2005 so thought I would add my two cents after 12 yrs of use. Only have 290 hrs on it and has been trouble free. Biggest complaint is the deck clogging up in moist grass. Poor deck design when it gets gunked up in 10 minutes.

Owned a Ferris 1500z since 2007. No issues if you follow the operators manual for maintenance and service. I mow 8 acres every two weeks in season. Only replaced the blades, filters, and one major service. The rest is cleaning the air filter regularly, changing the oil and filters (easy) and the fuel filter occasionally. Lube every 25 hours. Still runs like a charm. Best mower made.
