Hey Fellas,

I got a 2007 hustler super z with a 27hp kohler and it just started a rough idle about a week ago. Thought it might be fuel or air filter related and they are both new and clean. running ethanol free fuel and haven't had any other issues. Power doesnt seem to be affected and it is cutting strong. It just wont idle smooth. Anything pop out to ya'll that i should be checking???

Thanks!

Dang, I did see a small crack in fuel line from tank to filter just above clamp from hose to fuel filter. I thought I should replace it but wasn't sure. That sounds like the culprit. I will replace hose and try that. Thanks Sharpcut1!

So I am taking the advice to replace the visibly cracked fuel line and see that basically all of my Gates SAE fuel lines have visible lateral cracks in them. This is a 2007 mower so I could expect to see that. I saw from some old threads that people suggested that there are slight leaks in the lines causing air into lines and getting rough idle and also that there might be small pieces of rubber in the carb.

2 questions:

1. Is it hard to remove and check the carb myself? I am trying to learn to be more self sufficient with my equipment.

2. The fuel lines that the shop sold me are not braided SAE lines but just general black rubber lines and I am concerned that I am not using the right lines for this. I want to take them back if I need the braided SAE stamped fuel lines.

Thanks!

All you need is any good quality 1/4" nylon reinforced ( braided) fuel line. Most that you buy is reinforced. Just look at the cut end, you should see white specks 'bout midway thru the tube wall. That would be the braid/reinforcement. You could also bologna slice the end to check.
What yer referring to as "SAE" is prolly "low permeation" type, which you pay extra for and don't really need.

Download a service manual from Kohler's website. It will show ya the carb details. http://www.kohlerengines.com/manuals/landing.htm

thanks Bigfish. The fuel line the guy sold me is definitely does not have white specks through tube wall. It is soft rubber and I was not paying attention when he rolled it and handed it to me. I will have to go back and get the right stuff.
