Last week I bought an 06 metro. The seller said that it had been recently serviced, but I'm starting to wonder what he meant by serviced. The engine oil is pretty clean, but the transmission oil is black and very dirty. I know that you are supposed to put 15 w50 oil In the tranny, but I've got a whole case of 15w30 oil that my grandfather bought dor his old ford. Could I use that?

Check your owners manual, when I serviced my transmission it required splitting the cases, cleaning out the used grease and repacking with a specific transmission grease, Bentonite I think it was. It can be a little hard to locate but I think most dealers will have it in stock.

I didn't get the manual with the machine, but I'm beginning to think that I should buy one.
I forgot to ask, how long do the spindles on mowers last? This is my first professional mower, so I want to do everything right.

If the transmission is okay and pulls strong, does not slip or leak I would leave it alone. They take grease not oil. Check the transmission belt underneath and make sure it is tight. Many times people think the transmission is bad only to find out all they needed to do was tighten the belt pulley.

There is nothing wrong with the tranny, but the grease ( i tend to think that who ever serviced it never really did anything to it) seems to be pretty dirty.
Besides I love working on this kind of thing, and have some time right now, so I'd like to do it when I have time rather than when I'm pressed for it.

From the owners manual it advises to use Peerless grease part # 788067 should be 1.5-1.75" from gear box bottom. I have a 2007 metro.

Exmark made a floating deck version at one point. Are you sure you have a belt drive?? Your talk of oil would be consistent with a hydro drive transmission.

Exmark manuals are available online, no charge, right from the factory. I have 2 mid-90's machines, a pre-Metro Viking belt drive and a Viking hydro. I was able to download both manuals from the Exmark website. If you have your SN you should find it, otherwise, send them an e-mail request.
I have always found Exmark very responsive to my requests.

mine doesn't have the ECS controls.
I took everything off of the wheel hub up to the belt drive wheels, but once I got to that I was kind of at a loss as to what to take off next, I wanted to clean the axle bearings. There is a cap in the center of the drive shaft, and under that was a bunch of grease and a strange looking nut. I don't think that i have a socket big enough for that nut. Sorry, no pictures, I didn't think of taking any until I put the cap back on. I will probably end up taking the whole thing apart again, because I noticed the bolt that holds the wheel brake is very loose.

A camera wouldn't last a day in my shop. I don't get how folks do such nice threads on their projects. Must have a hand sink in the shop or something. Maybe a wife or kid that follows them around documenting.

When I take something apart I wear gloves but after 2 minutes the gloves are shredding and grease and crap is everywhere. I never once thought to myself "hey this would be a good time to take pictures". Lol that will be the day.
