I bought a Ferris IS3100Z 6 years ago to the date and opted for the 37hp Kawasaki FXT100V engine (FXT00V-VS00-R). Just recently started to experience back-firing through the carb, a knocking sound, and loss of power. I took it to a Kawasaki dealer who found out that this engine has had several service bulletins (issued a couple years after I bought it) for cam and head replacement. I received none of these from the dealer nor from Kawasaki. After tearing the engine apart, he confirmed the cams, head, and values are bad.

Since the engine is now 6 years old, Kawasaki is refusing to provide any compensation (parts or labor) to fix it "since it's out of warrenty". The Kawasaki rep on the phone literally said that it's a badly designed engine and these new kits would fix it. Together, they cost a $1000. In my opinon, a recall is a recall regardless of whether the engine is out of warrenty and therefore Kawasaki should pay for at least parts.

I called the dealer I bought the mower from and they said Kawasaki doesn't issue service bulletins to them which Kawasaki said they did. What are your thoughts on that and have you had these issues with this particular engine?

I cannot support a company that doesn't back it's products. I will NEVER buy a Kawasaki product again and I am sharing this as fast as I can across my network.

If it's a design issue, I do. The engine only has 286 hours on it which I explained. The issues aren't caused by excessive use...they're caused by poor design which Kawasaki admitted and are responsible for.
Same as a truck. It's out of warranty not their problem.

Gm 3.8 head gaskets fail at 150k due to a bad design. Gm doesn't care

Hey fellas. It might be tough for you to PM each other being new to the site.

Drew (I'm assuming) I believe we met a several years back. I was with Husqvarna Turf Care at the time.

If I can help get the two of you together in any way, let me know. If you'd like, you can both email me your contact info and I can pass it along to the other. You can email me at Jim@(my business logo in my avatar).com

Ummm...... I think you need to be pizzed at your "dealer" instead of Kawasaki......

Work'n for a Kawi dealer over 20 years, I can say YES Kawi does send ALL dealers parts information bulletins AND service bulletins. Early years were by snail mail and now electronically, I just looked up the head/cam bulletin which came out 03-2011. Had your "dealer" stayed on top of his bulletins and stayed awake at the update seminars, You wouldn't be having this issue now......

First off, a "Recall" is usually for a safety related issue!

A "Service Bulletin" is to advise that there has been a change to an item or to address a known issue!

I have NOT heard of very many prople being injured from a cam or a valve/rocker arm issue! Thus NO REACALL!

As for the latest Service Bulletin which I received yesterday, it pertains to the following:

FXT00V DFI
Spec. Numbers _S01, _S03, _S13, _S14 and _S20
Serial Numbers A00001 - A15881

Those are the ONLY DFI specs. listed!

The Service Bulletin ENG 14-02 is not yet posted on Kawasaki's dealer site that I can see.

The Service Bulletin details the following:
"The FXT00V DFI Engine Models may at some time, experience symptoms to include surging, misfire and poor running due to ignition coil failure. An Ignition Coil Part Kit has been made available to eliminate this possibility from occurring during engine operation.

The Kit contains 2 brackets, 2 coils w/leads and hardware. The Kit Part Number is 9999-0476

Ummm Your engine is 6 yrs old. Bulletin came out in 2011 for a very specific serial range. I get the feeling there's more to this story. What is the serial number of the engine? We contacted all customers for an inspection. It was easy money. Presented correctly to KMC, I've found them to be extremely helpful and generous with policy adjustments. Start a war and you will lose. But that's up to you.

Just curios did you get it in the mail or fax or??? I have not seen that one yet. I know they are transitioning over to paperless so wondering if maybe it went to spam in my email if thats where they sent it.

Also any idea if the Kaw power and k dealer site match for this stuff? I have never looked at both but just curious.

Pugs,

The Service Bulletin came in the mail as they always have, however there was a letter along with it that stated Kawasaki was no longer going to send Service Bulleting out and to get the latest information from the k-power site.

I'm at home now, and just pulled up the k-power site and the Service Bulletin is still not listed... I think the Service Bulletin was dated 6/2/2014, so it will probably be posted tomorrow on the k-power site.
If not, I can bring it home, scan it and email it to you if you wish...

I'm not sure if k-power and k-dealer match or not, I do not personally use the k-dealer site but the office women do for billing.
