We bought a swing set today and have 3-4 weeks to get ready for the install. My plan is to mark the area and the dig down about 4". After the install the set I will fill it with mulch. I don't plan to use a border, the top of the mulch will be level with the yard (ideally). The guy at home depot suggested renting a mid tine tiller and then just shoveling the dirt out after I run the tiller through the area. What other suggestions for clearing out the area at least 4" deep.

Thanks!

as it turns out my wife wants to put the swings in another location, of course it isn't level at all. we're going to hire someone to come in and lower the slope and add some soil to level it off and then probably build a small border..

Just got a quote to have some work done to prep for the swing set. Good deal or too high?

Parts:
Pressure treated lumber for border.
6 -4x6x12 $200
6 -4x6x8 $120
Nails $25
Playground mulch $160
2 yards top soil $80
Cement for bottom layer of lumber $25
Mini excavator rental $250 (he has a bigger one, but can't get it into my backyard so has to rent)

Labor:
excavate land and grade, add top soil, install wood with cement and nails, spread mulch.

$1500 cash.

Materials seem alright. Just not sure why the contractor is giving you a piece by piece breakdown. Thats too time consuming on a large scale...
Eq seems too low.

But cmon $1500 just for the area to put the swing set in? When we were kids a $4 rope and a free tire worked fine. Or man up and do it yourself = priceless. Plus use the kids so they learn hard work.
